Baggage

Reader Response 9/28:
While reading I came to the conclusion, with help from the reading, that we can never look at anything without bringing something to what we are seeing.  For example, looking at a painting, we bring to it what we "know" about ourselves and the world, so it seems that we can never look at anything purely.  Our backgrounds and experiences will always affect the meaning of what we are seeing and alter it to suit our beliefs.  The idea that we all would view a piece of art in different ways based on our experiences is pretty cool, but at the same time it's difficult to think about.
If I wanted to get a message across with my art, just how clear would I have to be in creating the art so my meaning would not get altered.  Maybe it doesn't matter because no matter how clear my message, it won't always be taken in in the same way for everyone.  Will that change how I go about my art? I'm not sure...

  1. I don't think we can ever clearly keep our meaning as we would wish it to be. Everyone sees things with their own particular brand of blinders on.

  2. I don't think it matters what the viewer derives through their own experiences or filters--your intent is your intent. I don't create my art for others, I create it for myself. It's about enjoying the process. If it's taken in other directions by a viewer then I have to believe that that just makes it all the more compelling and keeps it fresh. Fresh is good! :)

  3. I usually create art for myself as well... however, since I am going into graphic design, I have to learn to create it for people as well... that's where I can run into some problems it seems, or the opposite will occur and I'll be clear... we shall see! :)
